Odd Ways

Odd ways is found at the very end of a tiny lane and cocooned by thick ancient forest on all sides. The wild ponies have foals by the front gate and the birdsong is so beautiful it’ll stop you in your tracks. It is a proper ‘hide-away’.

But what treasure…!  Inside, guests can expect pared-back, peaceful style, gentle colours and…. horses! They adorn the walls, trot on shelves, there are bridles and brushes and Thelwell curtains.

For those who feel cooped up, staying here offers unsurpassed escapism…. the forest will smooth away your worries, exploring very locally will enchant you. There is no need to use the car. Children can play at the end of the garden in the stream and ford, climb trees, or hunt crickets in the long field grass. This is the perfect destination for ‘being slow’.

The owner is a New Forest pony collector and her herd are a genial bunch; Spirit, Silver, Forrest, Darkie… Horses now and horses past. Their names are woven into the spirit or this house. They evoke the romance of old forest legends and fables, wild rides and long friendships. This home is a place to reconnect with nature in her purest form. Slowly. With measure. With curious eyes. And we’re sure you’ll leave with a smile in your heart.

Through peak summer months, at the bottom of the garden field you’ll find an extra bedroom. A railway carriage hut. It’s rough luxe camping. Deep bed, pristine sheets, a pot-belly stove and kettle…open it’s front back doors wide and bathe in ancient trees, green silence and stars. The wild ponies will interrupt you as they drink in the quiet stream that flows here. The Railway Carriage is only available for a max of 4 weeks a year and is already booked for 2021.

The location...

The house is right on the corner or the Beaulieu River area, the East End area and the Brockenhurst area. Make sure you read all 3 of our Insider Guides.

The Beaulieu River is one of the few privately owned rivers in the world and has been in the ownership of the Montagu family for over 400 years. Land here is tightly held and cherished by residents. The area feels manicured and wild.
